Master of Electrical Engineering Program Cornell University Design Project Report Project Title: Ionospheric irregularities as observed from the GPS reference station in Singapore, March 2002 Author: Pongabha Abhakara Abstract: In regions near the geomagnetic equator, the phenomenon of ionospheric irregularities that causes scintillations in Global Positioning System (GPS) signals occurs frequently during the time from sunset to midnight near the Equinox. This project investigates the characteristics of ionospheric irregularities in Southeast Asia using GPS observation data collection from the GPS reference station in Singapore (lat:1.2◦N, lon: 103.4◦E) in March 2002. Dual-frequency measurements of the GPS signals are used to extract the total electron content (TEC) along the path of GPS signals. Rapid TEC fluctuations which indicate the presence of ionospheric scintillations were observed on several nights in March 2002. Report Approved by Project Advisor: Date: May 20, 2004

Global positioning system (GPS) measurements provide accurate and continuous 3-dimensional position, velocity and time data anywhere on or above the surface of the earth, anytime, and in all weather conditions. However, the predominant ranging error source for GPS signals is an ionospheric error. The ionosphere is the region of the atmosphere from about 60 km to more than 1500 km above the eart...

The Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) will provide real-time differential GPS corrections and integrity information for aircraft navigation use. The most stringent application of this system will be precision approach, where the system guides the aircraft to within a few hundred feet of the ground. Precision approach operations require the use of differential ionospheric corrections. WAAS mu...

Geomagnetic storms are one of the main causes of ionospheric perturbations in different sizes, depending on their intensity, which could disturb radio signals passing through this medium. On September 6-12, 2017, the sudden storm commencement (SSC) was the most massive geomagnetic storm of the year due to the X9 solar flare caused by a coronal mass ejection (CME). IMF-Bz and Dst values increase...

In order to use fast static or real-time kinematic (RTK) cm-accurate positioning over larger distances, active GPS reference receiver networks have been established in parts of Germany with station distances of 30 to 50 km. Within these networks, the distance dependent error sources, like ionospheric and tropospheric refraction and broadcast orbit errors, are modelled satellite-by-satellite and...

The ionospheric plasma bubbles cause unpredictable changes in the ionospheric electron density. These variations in the ionospheric layer can cause a phenomenon known as the ionospheric scintillation. Ionospheric scintillation could affect the phase and amplitude of the radio signals traveling through this medium. This phenomenon occurs frequently around the magnetic equator and in low latitu...
